The traditional Paite homelands stretch across the high ridges, forested valleys, and river basins of southern Manipur in Churachandpur district (Zogam), extending into Mizoram and the Chin Hills of Myanmar. The terrain belongs to the Purvanchal Mountain Range, characterized by steep pine-clad slopes, mist-shrouded peaks (elevations ranging from 900m to over 2,000m), and rich biodiversity.

1. Mualnuam (Sub-Divisional Headquarters)

  • Location & Elevation: Situated along the strategic Guite Road in the Thanlon sub-division (~1,020m elevation).
  • Landscape: Perched on a scenic mountain ridge overlooking rolling forested valleys, Mualnuam serves as a central administrative and trade hub connecting southern hill villages with Lamka (Churachandpur).
  • Features: Known for its clear mountain air, pine ridges, terraced cultivation, and historic chiefship roots.

2. Songtal (Historic Hill Settlement)

  • Location: Located in the rugged southern hills of Churachandpur district.
  • Landscape: Nestled amidst dense sub-tropical forests and steep hill slopes, Songtal overlooks the upper catchment areas of regional streams feeding into the Tuivai River basin.
  • Culture: Renowned for preserving traditional Paite oral histories, customary land administration, and agricultural harvest traditions (Khuado Pawi).

3. Kaihlam Tang (Kaihlam Mountain Range)

  • Elevation: Rising to prominent heights, Kaihlam Tang is locally celebrated as "The Mount Everest of Zogam".
  • Landscape: A majestic, high-altitude mountain massif covered in evergreen temperate vegetation, rhododendrons, and natural rock formations. It forms a dominant landmark visible across multiple sub-divisions of Manipur and Mizoram.
  • Significance: Sacred in Paite folklore and poetry, Kaihlam is celebrated as a symbol of strength, endurance, and tribal identity.

4. Sinzawl (Historic River Border Village)

  • Location: Situated near the confluence of the Tuivai River along the borderlands of Manipur and Mizoram.
  • Landscape: Famous for the historic Jelshyam Bridge over the emerald-green waters of the Tuivai River. The village is surrounded by steep river gorges, lush bamboo groves, and ancient trading paths.
  • History: Sinzawl holds significant historical importance as a vital crossing point during ancestral migrations and traditional inter-village trade.

5. Singngat (Sub-Divisional Headquarters & Market Town)

  • Location: Major sub-divisional town in southern Churachandpur, situated along National Highway 102B (Guite Road).
  • Landscape: Spanning a high valley plateau framed by surrounding mountain ranges. Singngat acts as the chief commercial, educational, and cultural gateway for the southern villages.
  • Features: Home to historic community churches, vibrant local markets (tusuah), and traditional weaving centers producing the Puandum shawl.
